The South Sea pearls (South Sea) are rare and precious, they are grown in a giant oyster called Pinctada Maxima, they have in fact record characteristics. Their size is superior to any other cultured pearl. They present a solid state of beading, a characteristic that makes it lasting for generations. They are so precious and refined that they have been called "Queens of the Pearls, Pearls of the Queens".
The Pinctada Maxima can reach 25 cm in diameter and can weigh up to 5kg. It is a very delicate mollusk that lives in depth (100 meters) and has a high mortality rate up to 80% of the specimens.
The colors range from white to cream up to golden yellow. The most valuable are the so-called gold. Cultivation takes place by inserting in the mollusc gonad a rigid mother-of-pearl nucleus taken from a shell, and a fragment of the epithelium of a Pinctada Maxima oyster. The duration of cultivation varies from 20 to 24 months and the growth of the bud is about 2mm a year.
