South Sea pearls are rare and precious, they are cultivated in a giant oyster called Pinctada Maxima, in fact they have record characteristics. Their dimensions are greater than any other cultured pearl. They have a solid layer of pearliness, a characteristic that makes it last for generations. The Pinctada Maxima can reach 25 cm in diameter and weigh up to 5 kg. It is a very delicate mollusk, it lives in depth (100 meters) and has a high mortality rate of up to 80% of specimens.
The colors vary from white to cream to golden yellow. The most valuable are the so-called gold. Cultivation occurs by inserting a rigid nucleus of mother-of-pearl taken from a shell and a fragment of the epithelium of a Pinctada Maxima oyster into the gonad of the mollusk. The duration of cultivation varies from 20 to 24 months and the growth of the gem is approximately 2mm per year.
